Since 2007 the obligatory declaration to the border customs officials of cash sums in excess of 10 000 euros has been in force in all cases when crossing the borders of the European Union. In May 2012, meanwhile, a new EU Directive came into force whereby if the customs officials find undeclared amounts in exc
ess of 10 000 euros on a person crossing the border, they are required to impose an on-the-spot fine, which is to be seized immediately from the undeclared amo
unt. The rate of the fines is as follows:
The interpretation and enforcement of the directive vary from member state to member state, but it is definitely worth paying a little more attention to this matter.
