Romania's Prime Minister Confirms Corporation Tax Rate

The Prime Minister of Romania, Victor Ponta, has confirmed that the Government will maintain the country's 16 percent flat rate corporation tax until 2016.

Ponta gave the assurance during a meeting on Romanian-German economic cooperation, held earlier this week at the Deutsche Bank of Berlin. He subsequently explained that the rate would remain the same because investors make business plans several years in advance, and that the rate had been agreed by partners in the governing Social Liberal Union political alliance.

Ponta also confirmed that adjustments in tax would relate to individuals rather than to companies. A tax reduction had been proposed for those on very low incomes, he said, while if a solidarity tax were ever imposed, it would be payable only by high-earners.
