Casino to ease the financial pain in Cyprus?
Although the Turkish north of the island has a number of casinos, in the Greek south the influence of the Greek Orthodox Church and fears about the social dangers of gambling have led to them remaining illegal.
However, the drastic financial problems in Cyprus call for drastic solutions, and ministers have now approved plans for a super-casino resort in an attempt to attract big-spending tourists. Cabinet approved the plans in the summer, and the new legislation will go before parliament once MPs return from the summer recess.
The idea is to boost the tourism industry, which has now taken on an even more significant role following the problems in the banking sector.
