Continued rise in the number of companies registered in Hong Kong

The first six months of 2013 saw an increase of almost 10% in the number of new companies formed in Hong Kong compared with the previous six months. Some 85 000 new companies were added to the Companies Registry during the period, taking the total number of live companies to more than 1.1 million, more than 55 000 more than at the end of 2012.

There are also more than 9 000 non-Hong Kong companies with a place of business registered in Hong Kong. There were slightly fewer new registrations in the first half of 2013, with an additional 352 non-Hong Kong companies establishing a place of business there, while in the six months up to the end of 2012 the figure reached 367.

Hong Kong has also re-written and modernised its Companies Ordinance, with the changes expected to take effect early in 2014.
